El santuari es troba molt a prop de l'església de Sant Pere de Montgrony, que va ser l'església parroquial fins al s. XVII. La primera notícia escrita que es té del santuari data de 1400, quan ja hi havia una petita construcció dedicada a Mare de Déu, excavada en la pedra de les llegendàries escales que menen al pla de Sant Pere.

Per damunt del petit santuari hi ha l'església romànica de Sant Pere de Montgrony que es va construir en el replà que hi ha damunt la cinglera i que també s'hi accedeix per unes escales. Sant Pere de Mongrony, es un edificio que fue consagrado el 1138 y mantuvo las funciones parroquiales hasta el siglo XVII, cuando fueron trasladadas a la villa de Gombrèn. A partir de este momento solo habitó un cura custodio y algunos ermitaños. Presenta una sola nave coronada por un ábside y dos absidiolos en forma de trébol.

En 1915 es va realitzar una nova campanya de restauració, que foun completada en 1958 amb unes noves.
